There are plenty of rare and exotic cars in the world, but few can match the prestige and legacy of the Ford GT40. Otherwise known as the World’s Rarest Ford, the GT40 features a top speed of 200 mph and sits at just 40 inches in height. Don’t be too quick to pull the trigger on your purchase though. One Ford GT40 is up for sale and will likely break $7 million.
For those with around $7 million lying around, one Ford GT40 is hitting the market in Monterey, California. The model is one of a dozen prototypes, making it extra rare.
Ford only made 133 GT40s, making it by sheer numbers one of the rarest cars in the world. That number is on par, and often lower, than the total production of exotic car models, such as Ferrari. As it turns out, the creation of the GT40 had a lot to do with Ferrari.
After Ferrari refused to sell to Ford in the 1960s, Henry Ford II ordered the creation of a beast that could crush the exotic brand at Le Mans, one of the most popular races in the world.
Two year later, the Ford GT40 took to the track and swept past Ferrari for four straight years. With vengeance achieved, Ford discontinued the GT40 in 1969.
We at Gurley Motor Company are happy to see the legendary GT40 still has a large following!
