In a new investment that looks to the future of transportation, Ford and Autonomic have teamed up. Autonomic is a Silicon Valley-based company that creates autonomous vehicle platforms and software. With this partnership Ford can advance its self-driving vehicles even more.
“The platform would allow us to build services, as well as others, because the platform would be open to cities and other services,” Ford Smart Mobility communications manager Alan Hall told The Verge. “The layer that Autonomic provides is non-differentiated services.”
Possible uses for this partnership include the Chariot service that uses Ford Transit vans to move people through cities, the new Domino’s autonomous delivery vehicles, self-driving Lyft cars, or even a new non-emergency medical service in Michigan that helps transport patients who are unable to drive.
What the Autonomic platform would do is help with features like payments, identify authentication, mapping, and routing. Ford would provide the vehicles, which would then be modified with the appropriate hardware and software.
Here at Gurley Motor Company, we are excited to see the future of mobility and the ways in which Ford adapts to the changes and demands of America’s drivers. What do you think about autonomous vehicles? Would you like to ride in one?
