The Ford F-150 Diesel has been a long time coming, and now it’s finally arrived. The model offers high efficiency and capability on par with the full-size trucks with conventional gasoline engines. That’s great and all, but is the F-150 Diesel pickup arriving too late to the game?
Our answer to that question should be obvious. The Ford F-150 Diesel isn’t too late. In fact, it’s arriving just in time to offer true competition in the pickup segment.
A 3.0-liter diesel V6 engine that produces 250 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque powers the F-150 Diesel. It comes mated to an advanced 10-speed automatic transmission that was jointly developed by Ford and General Motors.
Critics claim that the F-150 Diesel’s arrival might be too late. Diesel-powered vehicles are coming under increased scrutiny following a 2015 efficiency scandal. But according to Ford, meeting and exceeding regulator expectations is no problem at all.
The American automaker emphasized that its diesel powertrains meet regulations. They tested the engines under all conditions, not just during a single test. Testing phases include while the truck was towing a trailer.
The Ford F-150 Diesel is capable of towing up to 11,400 lb. It comes in with a payload rating of just over 2,000 lb. For comparison, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6 engine offers a maximum towing capacity of 13,000 lb and a payload rating of 3,000 lb.
